How to sew a face mask with filter
Hello friends, how are you keeping? It has been some challenging weeks and I hope you are hanging in there.
Today’s sewing tutorial is focused on our health needs at this point in time. We need to protect ourselves and this facemask tutorial is something you may find useful.
There is a mask pattern provided below where you can download from this link
You can add a filter in the mask and also put a nose clip to tighten the fit. Certainly a great tutorial! Thanks to Sewing Therapy for putting such a helpful tutorial.

it would be nice if your mask pattern was downloadable to size. When you copy it, it isn’t sized to the 1 inch square.
hi Elaine, you can try this link at https://sewingtherapy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/MASK-PATTERN-01.pdf
What kind of material can be used for the filter?
In a search of the web…a water impermeable fabric will provide some resistance to the virus. I’ve found that the FORMED (not woven) bags that come as advertising for sites such as Doctors without Borders work well. To check if a fabric is water impermeable: Wet the fabric thoroughly while holding the under side of the fabric. If your hand is dry – as well as the undersurface of the fabric (think umbrella action)…it will repel liquids, hence virus particles as they need “holes” to enter. This is NOT an N95 mask, but it’s a lot better than nothing or just cotton fabric for protection in these trying times. I use a rectangle 6 X 9 inches and 2 thicknesses of QUILTING cotton fabric – the back layer with an opening to allow the removal of the water impermeable fabric for cleaning and washing the mask.
The CDC is now saying that we may be masked for a year or more…is this our latest “fashion accessory? Stay Safe…Stay Home…Stay in Touch with your loved ones.
what did you use as your filter.
Glad to find a mask with a filter
I would like to know how long are the pieces of elastic?
1/4″ Elastic will work.
Needing a good template to make masks
I would like it sent to me email address .I would like a copy on paper.
What do you have on the ends of your elastic? How did you secure it!
Adjust your printer settings. Usually you can increase or decrease size by percentages. If the 1″ is too small on your printout, raise the percentage to 1 or 2% till the 1 inch is correct it on your printout. Vise versa for decreasing size.
What did you use for the filter?
Hi Ivy, there are filters in amazon, but i am not sure if they are in stock. So sorry I am not an expert in filters.
Could email me the pattern ?? I want to make my own fabric mask
Certain furnace filters can be deconstructed to make several filters.
use coffee filters I heard!!!
I heard to use the blue shop towels, they filter perfectly!
You can use Hepa vacuum bags cut to size as a filter also.
Warning. HEPA filters can contain glass particles. Not advisable to breathe through.
Thank you for this great tutorial and pattern. I have made several and have shared the pin with many friends! Great instruction video.
Love your video on face mask. Was wondering what you used for the filter
Thanks
Joanne
Beautiful made
Since this is 100g cotton, did you pre-shrink? I’m concerned about shrinkage when they are cleaned, but have several to make and would just as soon not.
It’s recommended to wash and iron your fabric before any sewing project to avoid shrinkage. Good luck!
Thank you so much for your tutorial! It was easy to follow!!!
I love your tutorial but wish you had a printed version too. I like to refer to the steps as I go along and it’s pain to keep going back to the video.

Buy a HEPA furnace filter and you should have enough material for about 100 masks.
Hi there. Thank you so much for the template. However, can’t make the size for children on my printer. Thanks for the help
Hi How long are the elastic pieces? You said 1/4 wide, but how long? I’m having problems with making the mask tight enough and do not know how long to make them for other people. Thank you
Do you have a downloadable pattern for children of the face mask with filter pocket?
